G.S. DIKSHIT, 1911-2004

Girish Sridhar Dikshit (girIsha srIdhara dIkshit) (ಗಿರೀಶ್ ಶ್ರೀಧರ ದೀಕ್ಷಿತ್) was a well known historian of Karnataka and he was an erudite scholar in Western as well as Indian history. He was born in Harihara, a town in Davanagere district. He had to work in far off places such as Parlikimedi in Orissa and Sangli in Maharashtra. He joined the department of History in Karnataka University in 1955 and obtained a Ph.D. degree in history from the same institution. He retired as the Professor and Head of the department in 1971. He had an opportunity to work in the Universities of Wisconsin , Madison in U.S.A. and the Toranto University in Canada . He presided over South Indian History Congress, the 21st Annual Conference of the Institute of Historical Study , Karnatak History Congress and Andhra Pradesh History Congresses. He was the founder president of Karnataka Itihaasa Academy .

Dikshit’s contributions to historical studies are manifold. He has edited a volume an American History from the point of view of an Indian Historian. He has written nine books and more than hundred research papers in English as well as Kannada. Some of his important publications are as follows:

1.      ‘Local self-government in medieval Karnataka’. 1964, Karnatak University , Dharwar.

2.      ‘Tank irrigation in Karnataka: a historical survey’, (with G.R. Kuppuswamy and S.K. Mohan), 1993, Gandhi Sahitya Sangha, Bangalore .

3.      ‘Early Vijayanagara: Studies in its History and Culture’: Proceedings of S. Srikantayya Centenary Seminar, (with others) B.M.S. Memorial Foundation, Bangalore .

4.      ‘Studies in Keladi History, Seminar papers’ edited by Giri. S. Dikshit), 1981, Mythic Society, Bangalore .

‘Giridhara Sri’ is the name of the felicitation volume presented to him and it is edited by A.V.Narasimha Murthy and K.V.Rammsh. This contains a number of articles on Indology. Dikshits’ contribution to an understanding of our past is quite significant.
